Pakistan: Investigate Disappearance of Wahid Baloch (UA 181/16)


Human rights defender Wahid Baloch may have been subjected to enforced disappearance by state security forces in Karachi, Pakistan, on the afternoon of 26 July. His family does not know where he is or what has happened to him. He is at grave risk of ill-treatment, torture, or even death. Scores of other activists who have been forcibly disappeared in Karachi and the neighbouring province of Balochistan have suffered similar fates in recent years.

Alfred Taban, prominent journalist and chief editor of the daily English newspaper, Juba Monitor, was transferred from the National Security Service (NSS) headquarters on 22 July to police custody in Juba town. He has been charged with 'publishing or communicating false statements prejudicial to Southern Sudan' and 'undermining the authority of or insulting the president'.

Two death row prisoners were moved on 24 and 25 July to Nusakambangan prison island, where 13 executions were carried out in 2015. A lawyer has been informed about the imminent execution of his client and three other Nigerian nationals. The authorities have suspended family visits to the prison complex and completed preparation of the executions grounds, indicating that another round of executions by firing squad will be carried out soon.

Sixty-year-old John Conner was executed in Georgia on 15 July after 34 years on death row.  He was sentenced to death for the murder of J.T. White committed in 1982. This was the sixth execution in Georgia this year, out of a national total of 15.

On 27 June Amina 'Abdouli and her brother Mos'ab 'Abdouli appeared before the Supreme Federal Court in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The court set 19 September for their next trial hearing. However, he is concerned for his safety and is unable to leave Mozambique as people believed to be members of the secret service police confiscated his documents when they detained him on 10 May. He is unable to meet his daily living costs in Maputo and has had to rely on the support of some local organizations.

On 17 July, Cairo Criminal Court is due to review a judicial order to freeze the assets of five leading human rights defenders (HRDs), members of their family, an NGO and their staff. They, and other prominent HRDs, are being investigated in Case 173 of 2011, the “foreign funding case”. If convicted, they could face up to life imprisonment.

Hasnat Karim, his wife and two children were among the surviving hostages from a recent attack in a restaurant in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, on 1 July. The family was then taken into custody by the Police Detective Branch for questioning. His wife and children were released on 3 July but Hasnat Karim has not been seen since 2 July.
